Greenland's parliament ratifies Trump's US security agreement

The US is set to expand its military footprint on the Arctic island, part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It follows pressure from Donald Trump earlier in the year which opened a major rift in the transatlantic alliance.
Greenland's parliament on Tuesday signed off on a trilateral security and military-access agreement with the United States and Denmark that paves the way for an expanded US' military presence on the strategically located and mineral-rich island. The deal has alleviated pressure coming from US President Donald Trump , who earlier this year had repeatedly threatened to take control of the self-governing Danish territory, citing US security interests .
After months of negotiation the agreement was signed in September by Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The agreement allows for two new US military bases and Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defence system.
