Democrats can block Trump’s legislative agenda and launch investigations, but they have no two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto. Democrats have taken control of the United States House of Representatives and Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections in a scathing defeat for US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
The Congress that will convene in early January will be radically different from the first two years of Trump’s second presidential term, which saw Republicans holding majorities in both chambers. While Democrats will have greater power to scrutinise Trump’s policies and obstruct any legislation they oppose, there is still a lot a president can do without congressional approval.
Trump has acknowledged the role the war on Iran has played in Republican losses in the midterm elections. “I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” Trump said during a telephone interview with Fox News.
