From the celluloid period to the digital age, the Nepali film industry has maintained its momentum while surviving to establish itself as a viable industry. It has made substantial efforts to stay afloat on the global stage and compete with the well-equipped film industries like Bollywood, Hollywood and other countries. Although relatively young compared with many established international film industries, Nepali cinema has a history spanning more than six decades.
The domestic film industry began with Aama, released in 1964, which is widely regarded as the first feature film produced in Nepal. However, the roots of Nepali-language cinema date back further to Satya Harishchandra, released in 1951. Although made in the Nepali language, the film was produced in Kolkata, India.
The growth of the Nepali film industry has repeatedly been hindered by political instability, natural disasters, economic crises, limited audience awareness and a lack of recognition and appreciation for the sector. These shortcomings have often hampered its growth, investment and expansion.
