AEPC’s Three Decades in Renewable Energy Promotion

Energy is not merely a commodity; it is a foundation for human development, economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. In Nepal, characterized by diverse geography and dispersed settlements, renewable energy has played a vital role in expanding access to modern energy services.

Recognizing this potential, the Government of Nepal established the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) on 3 November 1996 under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. Over the past three decades, AEPC has become a key institution in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency, contributing to rural development, environmental protection, and improved livelihoods.

As AEPC celebrates its 30th anniversary, this milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on its achievements and redefine its role in Nepal’s evolving energy landscape. When AEPC was established, renewable energy was primarily considered an alternative for communities beyond the reach of conventional electricity infrastructure.
